What is a PADI I.D.C? Unless you have come from another training organization most of you will already have some idea of the Instructor development courses structure and purpose.
The PADI Instructor development course has two prime objectives.
The development of your teaching skills The expansion of your knowledge and understanding of the PADI system of diver education Take a moment to reflect on a good teacher that you remember. What made him/her so good? Among your answers should be complete understanding of the subject matter, and the ability to transfer that knowledge in a seamless manner The good news is by following the PADI system of diver education these skills will easily become second nature to you as you are about to discover during this I.D.C. Continuing education is a major part of the PADI system. By the end of this I.D.C you will be familiar both with the courses and the educational material that is available to you Ok, let’s take a quick look at the prerequisites to qualify for the PADI I.D.C. Be certified as a PADI assistant Instructor/Divemaster or hold an Instructor rating with another recognised diving agency. Be at least 18 years old. Submit a medical form signed by a doctor stating your fitness to dive (dated within the last 12 months). Have held a recognised diving certification for at least 6 months Have at least 60 logged open water dives (With experience in night, navigation and deep diving). submit proof of C.P.R training (dated within the last 24 months).

The Instructor Exam
In order to be certified as a PADI instructor you will need to complete and be successful at a PADI Instructor examination (I.E)
Most candidates prefer to take the I.E directly following the I.D.C as all the information is still fresh in the memory. You may however choose to complete the I.E at a later date; you have 12months from the completion of the I.D.C to do so.
What you need to achieve in order to be successful at a PADI I.E
Pass the five dive theory exams with a 75% score or higher. You will be tested on Physics, Physiology, Recreational dive planner (Wheel and Table versions), dive equipment and general skills and the diving environment. One retest allowed.
One PADI general standards and procedures exam. (Open book test so no retest allowed). 75% or higher required to pass.
One Knowledge development presentation (One retest allowed)
One Confined water presentation. One skill only (One retest allowed)
One Open water presentation. Two skills only. (No retest allowed)
Demonstrate exercise seven from the PADI Rescue diver course (One retest allowed).
A skill circuit of five skills from any of the twenty in the Divemaster skill circuit. (One retest of one skill allowed)
Evaluation of general diving skills. This evaluation is made by the PADI staffs who conduct your I.E. You will be evaluated on both your open and confined water performances.
Evaluation of your attitude and professionalism and general conduct during the I.E

Life after the I.E
After you have achieved your O.W.S.I rating you are invited to attend Reefwatch’s 2 Day Discover marine Biology program. The program is designed to give an insight and hands on experience in studying the underwater world, and acquaint you with the work done by Reefwatch in Coral reef study and protection.
You will learn all about how to track and record the condition of reef ecosystems, how to estimate species numbers, how to place and maintain a system of mooring buoys, organising reef clean ups and safe net removal, artificial reef placement, you’ll also get hands on experience in camera and video usage as many of our research programs involve work with these tools.
The ability to point out and explain what a certain species of fish or shrimp is doing is a great way to entertain and maintain enthusiasm in your students. The program is conducted over two days diving in the local area.
This program is absolutely free of charge and is our way of thanking you for choosing the Reefwatch I.D.C
Please note: There are occasions when this program is unavailable so if you are very interested in completing this segment please check with us before booking. No alternative is available.

Further training
The new emergency first response instructor course is available to divemasters, assistant instructors and O.W.S.I. This course teaches you to train people in C.P.R, and first aid techniques. You will also be taught how to use an automated external defibrillator (Aed). Apart from the obvious benefits of his training you will be able to supply your rescue and divemaster candidates with the necessary training required for these courses.
Specialty instructor training programs: These courses show you how to conduct and market specialty diving courses. Training with a course director allows you start teaching these programs immediately, which helps you to the master scuba diver trainer rating, for more information on the route you should take please contact Ian Shaw.

Frequently asked Questions
Q: I know I have to achieve a certain level of performance in the classroom and pool how much time will I have to do this?
A: Because our pool and classrooms are owned by us time in both is unlimited, you will have all the time you need to develop the skills to take you to instructor level. You will also be able to learn in an unhurried manner without having to rush through a skill because the hotel manger wants his pool back.
Q: What advantages are there in doing an I.D.C in Krabi?
A: Compared to other I.D.C locations Krabi town is very quiet and lacks a nightlife scene. Quiet accommodation is conducive to effective study. Your all around costs are lower here than in many other Thai locations.
Q: What can I do in order to be prepared for the I.D.C?
A: It might surprise you to learn that in percentage terms the greatest number of candidate failures in the I.D.C and I.E occur in the dive theory sections. So what you need to do is open up your Encyclopedia of diving and retake all the divemaster exams this will give you a very clear indication of your current theory knowledge.
Note from Ian: If your dive theory is good you will really enjoy the I.D.C and truly benefit from the experience, on the other
hand if your theory is sub-standard you will find yourself playing catch up and struggling to focus on the development side of the I.D.C. So be
good to yourself and get this organized from the start. We do offer an I.D.C preparation course. We would much rather you spent these two days in the pool working on your
skills rather than sitting through five dive theory presentations and then taking exams

About Reefwatch Worldwide The aim of the Reefwatch Worldwide organisation is to inspire and support the setting up and running of long term self sustaining studies of local reefs. Each projects aim is to produce an accurate and constantly updating picture of a local reef ecosystem’s health, and implement appropriate management and conservation techniques to support it. Here in Krabi we help to fund this work through the actions of our 'Five star' dive center by teaching PADI courses, dives, and now I.D.C’s. Another of Reef watch’s goals is for every species in a project area to be identified, photographed, and subject to ongoing behavioral studies. This amount of local specific information should make a Reefwatch projects information archive a highly useful resource to anyone conducting studies in that particular area. In addition because the information will be presented in non technical terminology and rely heavily on visual images more people will be able to see and understand how valuable and fascinating Marine life is. A great amount of the research data generated by our project is provided by independent instructors observing and reporting the reefs condition as they work. Dive professionals are well placed to note the conditions of their local reefs as they dive the same sites many times in a week and are quickly aware of any damage or bleaching, currently this massive pool of Reef knowledge is largely ignored by the scientific community. Our course director Ian Shaw has been involved with Reefwatch projects for several years helping to fund expeditions to the Maldives, Mexico, and Thailand. He had also been one of the driving forces in the linking of funding our work through teaching diving a process we hope to see expand over the coming years.
